Indecent Dressing

Has it come to your notice that even when science hadn’t brought much advancement, people sewed leaves to cover their nakedness because of the ignominy attached to it? But unfortunately, the mindset of people has changed in these contemporary days. They now consider it pleasurable to sway to the dictates of indecencies. It is so saddening that a lot of people don’t consider it bad to indulge in feats that offend public moral standards. The exposure of sensitive parts of the body such as the boobs, hips, buttocks and the back is not depressible to them. Having boys and girls wear skirts and trousers drooping fromtheir buttocks has become a common sight on our streets.

Stakeholders in the cultural sector have identified indecent exposure of the body, especially amongst youths as one of the causes of the incessant cases of rape and sexual harassment in the country. The Nigerian Feminist Forum however see the penalty of indecent dressing as aviolation of the Fundamental Human Rightsof the citizen whereas, it is not the most effective way to curb decadency in the country. How on earth can we talk of indecent dressing without trampling on the Fundamental Human Rights of the individual? It is also important to note that culture is relative and thus, what is right ina place can be wrong in another especially in Africa wherethere are countries with multifarious cultural identities. Although, there are other issues of indecency and immorality that our society faces today. Take for instance, does indecent dressing make a man of 60 rape a girl of 8;a father rape his daughter or even,Peace Keeping soldiers rape victims of war?
Many youths do not think that the way they dress defines them. Your dressingtells people who you really are.Per-adventure,as a genius in a particular field and you are clad in a provocative dress showing all the curves or sensitive parts of your body,it could be offensive to people and you tend to lose your repute. The embarrassment becomes unbearable when the person you are communicating with centers his/her gaze on your personal‘accessories’. Aside the embarrassment it can bring, it exposes you to the danger of sexual assault.
The question now is why do people dress this way? From the research, I got to know that
  • Some people feel it’s cool to be in placid pants andtops with polka dots to be attractive.
  • Poverty:People use what they have to get they want
  • Up bringing: Some were just brought up that way and don’t really think it’s bad.

One must say here that everybody is to be blamed: parents, children, the media houses and the government. I have the following for them to ponder on:
  • To parents, children that are brought up with discipline instilled into them shy away from acts of indecency.
  • To children, peer influence can be detrimental. Learn to think of the result of every action you take.
  • To media houses, your function in the society is majorly didactic considering the effect of every media output on listeners and viewers.
It is high time we had a rethought on issues of this nature so that we can get rid of this mess.Be conscious, think right and make the world a better place.
